Porsche Using Hemp in One of their Supercars

Most of us already know that hemp is a widely used and useful material. Well, I’m not sure I would have believed someone if they told me that Porsche has now used hemp in the development of one of their supercars, but they have!

Having been around for thousands of years, we have all seen historical records of hemp balm CBD being used to create clothing, ropes, baskets and many other products. Despite its versatility however, it slowly got phased out of mainstream use for the most part and ended up being replaced by plastics, carbon fibres and other man-made materials which were preferred due to their flexibility, strength and production costs.

Unfortunately, many of the man-made materials produced contain plastic and therefore are not an environmentally or sustainable option. It has come ever more apparent that the long term negative effects of using plastic far outweighs the short term positive gain the plastic was developed for in the first place.

Thankfully Porsche are aware of the environmental issue and have invested in utilising hemp as part of the development of one of their new models, the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4. The hemp is being used in an organic fibre mix alongside flax to create certain parts of the bodywork.  They have used it in the doors and spoiler of their racing version due to the similarity in properties to carbon fibre, such as stiffness and weight.  The only difference being that the organic fibre mix is a little bit more eco-friendly.

We know that this development isn’t going to change the world in terms of pollution and environmental change but at least it is one small step towards using the natural, hugely underutilised and sustainable material that is hemp more widely.

We will be keeping our eyes peeled for further stories of hemp being investigated or considered in new developments but if you hear of any then please get in touch with us here at George Botanicals.
